Coon Rapids - One of Iowa's Great Places

On October 3, 2005 Coon Rapids - Whiterock was selected as one of Iowa’s three pilot great places. Great Places is an initiative begun by Governor Vilsack and administered through the Department of Cultural Affairs designed to promote bold thought, innovation and entrepreneurship to cultivate the unique and authentic qualities that make places in Iowa so special.

The Coon Rapids Great Place initiative is a 5-year, $24 plus million package of strategic projects, whose purposes are to develop the community as a rural tourism destination area, protect area natural resources, and address basic community needs in the areas of economic vitality, elder care, education, and diversity. These projects are being defined and managed by a wide array of partner institutions including Whiterock Conservancy, the Carroll County Conservation Commission, the City of Coon Rapids, Thomas Rest Haven, Coon-Rapids Bayard Community School District, and the Coon Rapids Development Group.
